Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd Passes On

billy_powellKeyboardist for the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Powell, died early Wednesday morning, January 28, 2009 after calling 911 complaining of chest pains. Paramedics responded to his call but when they arrived, he was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Powell was 56 years old.

Billy Powell was one of the survivors of the plane crash in October 1977 that claimed the lives of Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, vocalist Cassie Gaines and guitarist Steve Gaines.  The pilot, co-pilot and a road manager were also killed.

Powell joined the band as a musician in 1972 and became part of the legendary American rock group that brought us such great hits as “Freebird” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Fans are encouraged to leave notes on the band’s web site or here on his online memorial notice. Many are saddened by the loss of this man, one of America’s great rock icons.
