Cancer Deaths on the Decline

Federal health officials are claiming an incremental but significant triumph in the fight against cancer. According to officials, the rate of cancer deaths has decreased in the last 15 years. The reports show that cancer deaths declined an average 2.1% each year from 2002-2004, nearly double of the rate from 1993-2002. The decrease is attributed to the wide-range of work being done to fight all forms of cancer, including improved treatment, early detection capabilities, and better advertising and messaging programs publicizing the negative health risks of obesity and smoking.

More than half a million people die each year from cancer. This decline in deaths represents a significant improvement and constitutes the preservation of thousands of lives. Scientists understand that there is still a long way to go to significantly stifle the effects of cancer on our society but this trend is a good step toward eradicating the disease.
