Is too much TV deadly?

Television A recent study set to be published this week in Circulation, an American Heart Association journal, links television viewing to early death and heart disease. The study shows that participants who watched four or more hours of TV per day were 80 percent more likely to die from heart disease, and 46 percent more likely to die earlier all together.

H1N1 Death Toll Continues to Rise — What You Can Do

Swine FluAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), deaths as a result of the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, have totaled more than 6,000. As of today, the pandemic has affected over 199 countries and territories worldwide and continues to spread. What can you do to guard you and your family?

Swine Flu: NYC Shuts School Doors

nyc school closedThe New York City school closure count reached 16 today, reports ABC news. As a result of the swine flu (or H1N1 virus) epidemic, and 103 students exhibiting influenza-like symptoms during the last six days of school, today the city’s health commissioner and schools chancellor made the decision to shut down three more schools.

End-of-Life Care More Aggressive For the Faithful

A Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston research study has found that cancer patients who lean on their religious faith to cope with their illness were 3x more likely to receive aggressive life-prolonging treatment than those not relying on their beliefs.  They were also less likely to have made end-of-life preparations like creating a living will or determining a health-care proxy.  They also were less likely to have a do not resuscitate order in place.

Surviving Cancer: Now What Do I Do

A recent article by Joe Rojas-Burke in The Oregonian caught my interest because it addressed something that I think so many of us forget.  Though we lose many loved ones to cancer – a truly staggering number I’m afraid – we celebrate cautiously those that have had successful cancer treatments.  So many of those that beat cancer are left with little information on what to do next to stay that way. And even more so, families and friends rarely get advice or help on how to handle moving forward after this great thing occurs.
