Dealing with the Sudden Loss

Loss of any kind is painful but sudden loss, loss experienced when disasters strike like the collapse of the Missouri bridge, car accidents, or unforeseen heart attacks or strokes, create an even more intense grief. With no time to prepare or to share with those we lost, we can often become overwhelmed by the pain of sudden loss.

Anger and fear are often the most prominent emotions we feel when we experience sudden loss. We are angry that we did not get to say goodbye in the way we would have wanted and that our loved ones were taken from us so violently and without warning. Many also become fearful of the world when it shows us how quickly life can be taken from us. Many who experience sudden loss will retract into themselves and their home for a time, unable to face the cruelty of the world.

There are ways to heal the pain of sudden loss. Experts encourage those grieving to take time for themselves and their own health. Grief can push people to forsake their own good out of guilt and sadness. It is also recommending that we express our feelings in whatever way we can. Sharing our grief and sadness through words or paper help us come to terms with what has happened. This also allows you to go through the mourning process – it is not healthy to hold back our feelings. Finding a support group or organization that can help you work through your grief with others who may have had similar experiences is invaluable toward coming to terms with the change in your life. Finally, honor the person you lost by working through grief in a healthy way and remember them and love them throughout your own life.
