Deciding on a Memorial Marker For the Gravesite

Once a casket is buried or the cremated remains are interned in the ground or in a mausoleum, it is traditional to have a grave marker or headstone decorate the area in memoriam for the deceased.  Plaques, monuments, markers and headstones are all common memorials placed in honor of the loved one.

Deciding what type of marker to use is not always easy and should not be made lightly.  Many families choose to wait for some time after the funeral to decide on a grave marker. In this way they can best honor their loved one and not make the decision under the pressure and stress that comes with the initial shock of losing a loved one.  Others take the time to discuss a marker with their loved one during funeral pre-planning which allows the loved one to have input into how they would like to be remembered.

In addition to personal preference, there are logistical guidelines that should be taken into consideration as well.  The requirements of the cemetery on the type, size and placement of a monument play a big part in the decision as does the cost of such a marker.

Just as online memorials pay tribute to a lost loved one forever, so can a thoughtful headstone or plaque. Take the time to put into both the love, care and thought that is needed to make them lasting tributes.
