Doctor Shares Grief Experiences Online

Physician and author Elisa Medhus, M.D., recounts her grief after the loss of her son Erik, 20, after he took his own life in 2009 on her personal blog, Channeling Erik. She wrote an article for the Huffington Post stating her life split into two distinct sections after tragic event: “The Before and The After, The Bliss and The Dark Despair.”

When Dr. Medhus’ son was still alive, she was skeptic of all things spiritual. Erik’s death, however, changed Dr. Medhus’ take on the afterlife as the she sought answers and found comfort in the belief her son’s soul continued to thrive. She states in her article, “…soon, Erik began to challenge that belief by making his presence known to friends and family through smells, touch, apparitions, conversation and mischievous pranks. These events defied explanation.”

The doctor looked to science and determined it was permissible for her to believe there was a scientific basis for the psychic phenomena she experienced. Soon after, Dr. Medhus sought the help of mediums to communicate with her deceased son; experiences she feels were genuine.

Doctor Medhus writes:

“So, what started as a desperate attempt of a mother to reach her deceased son became a miraculous journey unto itself. This new journey propelled me out of grief and into the light.

“…Through his unique perspective from the afterlife, Erik provides insight and comfort to many, finding the fulfillment that eluded him in life on the earthly plane. Although his death has left a permanent hole in my heart, it has also ushered me into a new kind of light. It has opened my eyes and my mind and has given my son a life full of purpose and meaning. For this, I am eternally grateful.”

While it is not guaranteed that psychic phenomena and the assistance of mediums will serve as a link to the afterlife for everyone, or that the use of such resources is helpful for all who grieve. Dr. Medhus’ story about the death of her child, however, shows that individuals experience and deal with grief in manners that are very personal and unique. One way to remember the loss of a loved one, whether they are a child or adult, is with a memorial. In this age of technology, you can easily create a free online memorial with user-friendly templates and online tools so you can share your memories with your friends and family.
