Early Chinese Settlers Get a Proper Burial
The remains of some of the United State’s earliest Chinese settlers will finally have a chance to be laid to rest next month after five years of uncertainty. Their original graves were unearthed during the construction of a light rail line in east Los Angeles sparking years of debate and discussion over how best to honor them. Now, these early immigrants have been honored with a memorial wall at Evergreen Cemetery in LA, the cemetery where their remains will be laid to rest.
“It is so significant that those early immigrants who suffered so many indignities in life will now, through interment, will not have to suffer indignities through death,” said Rep. Judy Chu.
So many Americans have loved ones who pioneered their families transition into the United States. These grandparents and parents who left their families and country to start something new in America, to create a better life for their kids – they deserve to be honored and remembered. We at Valley of Life salute all these brave folks who helped build the melting pot we call the USA.
