Famed Producer David Brown dies

Helen Gurley Brown & David BrownAward-winning film and theatre producer David Brown died Monday in his New York home after a long illness. He was 93.

Brown had a hand in a number of hits on the silver screen. In fact, he was nominated for best picture at the Oscars four times for his films Jaws, The Verdict, A Few Good Men, and Chocolat. In 1991, Brown won the Irving G. Thalberg award for the consistent producing of high quality films throughout his career.

Brown’s other credits include bringing Elvis Presley to film for the first time (Love Me Tender) and George C. Scott into the title role of Patton. Not to mention, Brown and his working partner Richard Zanuck gave Steven Spielberg his first big-screen picture in 1974, The Sugarland Express.

Brown’s influence on the film and theatre industry was immense, and he equally made contributions to pop culture with his writing genius. Chronicling Brown’s impact on our society as we know it seems a truly impossible task. His presence will be missed.

Brown is survived by his third wife, author and former editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown.

A public service is scheduled to be held Thursday in Manhattan at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel.
