Fans Celebrate the Anniversary of Elvis Presley’s Death

August 16 marked the 33rd anniversary of The King of Rock and Roll’s death. Elvis Presley died in 1977 at his Graceland home, where the rock icon is also interred. Although the temperatures were well above 100 degrees F, fans flocked from all over the world so they could wait in line to gain entrance into Elvis’ famous estate in order to memorialize him with floral tributes and late-night candlelight vigils.

Elvis Week

The Epoch Times states that Elvis fans call this time of year “Elvis Week.” During this time, Elvis Presley fan clubs meet, impersonator competitions take place and peanut butter-and-banana sandwiches are sold all over Graceland. Other Elvis Week events included a fan reception, Graceland Trivia Tour, midnight Southern breakfast, silent auctions, Sunday morning gospel singing and more.

Elvis Presley is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century pop culture. His voice, musical talent and unique dancing made Elvis a popular gospel, blues and pop ballad singer. Thus far, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music, according to Time.
