Farrah Fawcett loses battle to cancer
Cultural-icon Farrah Fawcett died this past Thursday morning. She was 62. Fawcett will be buried during a private funeral on Tuesday in an L.A. cemetery.
Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in September 2006 and, despite receiving extensive treatments with apparent success, earlier this year the cancer spread to her liver. In May, her longtime partner Ryan O’Neal announced Fawcett would be stopping treatment.
O’Neal, friends Alana Stewart and Mela Murphy, and doctor Lawrence Piro were with Fawcett when she died.
Fawcett is possibly best known for her role as Jill Munroe in the first season of the 1970′s TV series “Charlie’s Angels.” She was also widely viewed as a sex symbol during the years that followed resulting from a poster of Fawcett in which she was clad in a red one-piece bathing suit. The poster sold over 10 million copies.
During the rest of her career she starred in several movies including “Extremities” and “The Burning Bed.” More than her screen time, however, Fawcett might be better known for the drama that surrounded her personal life — including her on-and-off companion O’Neal and their troubled son, Redmond.
Fawcett recounted her life and trials battling cancer in a recent NBC documentary, “Farrah’s Story.”
