Green Burials A Return to Simpler Times

The green movement is taking root all over the world and in all facets of our lives. We try to eat foods that are sustainable or organic, we try to buy eco-friendly household products. We are now even buying fuel-efficient cars all in an effort to protect the earth and live a healthier life. Those that spend their life embracing the eco-friendly lifestyle typically wish to do so as they pass on.  Green burials are becoming increasingly popular.

To be considered a green burial, gravesites must be dug by hand, the body must be laid to rest without any sort of vault and the body must not be contaminated by embalming or cremation chemicals.

When planning a funeral for a loved one or making your own end-of-life plans, you can choose biodegradable caskets or urns. Where green burials continue to fall short in the U.S. is the availability of green cemeteries or burial places.  In most states in the midwest for example, the laws do not allow bodies to be buried without a casket.  What a growing number of people are trying to do is lobby for more green burial options throughout the U.S. To accomplish this, states will need to free up land that can be used for such burials.

These types of green cemeteries tend to be designed more like parks with natural elements like trees and rocks marking the locations of the deceased. What those that are lobbying for more options, it is a basic desire to return to earlier times when burials were simple and meaningful.
