Harold W. McGraw, Jr. of McGraw-Hill Publishing Dies


Harold W. McGraw, Jr., of the McGraw-Hill publishing business, died Wednesday morning in his Connecticut home. He was 92.

According to his son, Harold W. McGraw III, McGraw died of natural causes. “My father was a passionate and principled leader,” said McGraw III. “He was an inspiration to us all and deeply loved McGraw-Hill and its many contributions to society.” McGraw III is currently chairman, president, and chief executive officer of McGraw-Hill.

Born in January of 1918 in New York City, McGraw graduated from Princeton University. Later, he served as a captain in the Army Air Corps in World War II and then worked in advertising and book retailing before he started as a book company sales representative in the firm founded by his grandfather, James H. McGraw, in 1947.

In 1974, he was elected president of the corporation, and subsequently became its chief executive officer and chairman of the board. In 1988, McGraw retired at the age of 70 after being elected chairman emeritus by the board of directors.

Today, McGraw-Hill has more than 280 offices in 40 countries and is a global information services and education company providing essential knowledge in the financial, education, and business information sectors through leading brands including Standard & Poor’s, McGraw-Hill Education, and J.D. Power and Associates. In 2009, the company made nearly $6 billion in sales.

McGraw is survived by three children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
