Help Raise Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Health Magazine along with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA) is urging everyone to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer so that we can decrease the number of women dying each year from this horrible disease. Ovarian cancer to date has received far less attention than breast cancer (Breast Cancer Awareness Month was October) even though it is far more lethal. It is estimated that between now and 2010, 67,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, 79% of whom will be told that the cancer will end their life. This startling statistic is unacceptable given that 90% of women, who find the cancer early, can survive longer than those who don’t. We must make it a priority to fund the research necessary to decrease these deaths.

Scientists studying the disease have been hoping that they will create a blood test that will allow for early detection of the disease. Unfortunately, the speed at which this can happen is slow due in part because in the last three years, National Cancer Institute research funding for ovarian cancer has been reduced.

Health and the OCNA are urging men and women to petition their senators and congressmen to increase the current $125 million dollars in federal funds for research on ovarian-cancer prevention and early-detection.
