Hospitals Now Screening for Drug-Resistant Staph Infection

I wanted to give readers an update on what is being done at some hospitals to help the drug-resistant staph infection problem reported in October (read “What to Know about the New Drug Resistant Staph Infection”).

Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now requiring hospitals to screen patients for the drug-resistant bacteria. The bug, known as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is believed to have caused more deaths in 2005 than HIV. Experts hope that this new law with help reduce the outbreaks of MRSA.

Everyone can help in reducing the outbreaks of this deadly bacterium by washing hands thoroughly and often and asking for and agreeing to screening when necessary. More and more outbreaks are being reported outside of the hospital environment.
