How to Handle the Stress of Coping with Death

Everyone has some form of stress in their life and many have certain things they do to cope with it. Stress escalates to a much higher level when we must deal with the stress of a death in the family or to a loved one close to us. If you don’t deal with stress, it can become distress and will cause not only severe mental anguish but also disturb your physical health.

Kristi A. Dyer MD has written a very good article on the 10 steps to managing stress and distress. I encourage anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by their grief or bereavement to review her points. Many of them seem very simple – every day activities that you may usually do. But we often times forget to do the very simplest of things when we are suffering a loss. Read through her list and truly evaluate what you can do to improve your life and move through your grief. You will note that none of her points say to forget your grief or to move on. Remembering a loved one is a helpful way to deal with stress.
