Korean Boxing Champ Yo-Sam Choi Dies of Brain Injuries
Korean boxing champion Yo-Sam Choi died from brain injuries just days after a fight where he defended the WBO Inter-Contintental flyweight title. On December 25, Yo-Sam defeated Heri Amol by unanimious decision. During the fight he was dropped but got back to his feet to win the fight. He collapsed while still in the ring after the fight and was immediately taken to the Soonchunhyang University Hospital. There he had to undergo brain surgery but was unable to come back into consciousness. He was officially pronounced dead on January 2. He was 37 years old.
Yo-Sam’s career was short but full. He turned pro in 1993. He won the World Boxing Council light flyweight title in 1999 and went on to defend the title for three more years. His death was surprising, sudden and surely has sent shock waves through the boxing community. To help ease the pain of the family and to help others, Yo-Sam Choi’s heart, kidneys, liver and corneas were transplanted to patients on the Korean Network for Organ Sharing patient list.
