The Dave Matthews Band’s versatile saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, has died. Moore died Tuesday, August 19 of complications from injuries he received after an ATV accident he had on June 30 on his farm in Virginia. He was just 46 years old.
Moore was a classically trained saxophonist but his true love was jazz. His style of funk mixed with African rhythms influenced many Dave Matthews Bands albums. I fell in love with Moore’s music the first time I saw DMB play in Portland. As an amateur saxophone player, I was amazed by his ability to make that clumsy instrument capture emotion, energy and drama and in many cases drive the very heart of some of the band’s best music.
Of Moore’s passing Dave Matthews said at a recent show at the LA Staples Center, “It’s easier to leave than to be left.” I think we all believe that wholeheartedly.
We invite you to leave your memories, thoughts and condolences here.
