Lorenzo Odone, Inspirational ALD Survivor
Lorenzo Michael Murphy Odone has died in his home in Fairfax, Virginia at the age of 30 from the disease that made him famous. Lorenzo was an American adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) patient who became a celebrity because of his parent’s quest to find him treatment, a journey chronicled in the movie “Lorenzo’s Oil.” Lorenzo’s father, Augusto helped spark the creation of the first medication to show therapeutic results in stopping the destruction of the nerves, an affect of the disease. Lorenzo was considered a miracle by many as he managed to live 20 years longer than any of his doctors had predicted.
Lorenzo was fortunate in that his life story was chronicled in a popular movie, allowing others to learn from his life and find comfort and hope. Documenting a life story is powerful in so many ways. Whether creating an online memorial or writing down a stories life in a journal or book, the sharing of these stories is very important.
