Lung Cancer Claims Beloved Actress Suzanne Pleshette

Sultry voiced actress, Suzanne Pleshette, best known as the wife of Bob Newhart on “The Bob Newhart Show” died Saturday, January 19, due to respiratory failure. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006.

Suzanne was born in New York City and attended the NY High School of the Performing Arts and Neighborhood Playhouse. She starred on Broadway, television and the silver screen throughout her life. “Geisha Boy” with Jerry Lewis was her first film (1958) but she went on to star in teenage films like “Rome Adventure” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” On television, she played opposite Bob Newhart for six years on “The Bob Newhart Show” and then returned several years later, to play the same character in the series finale, of “Newhart” Bob’s follow-up sitcom.

Her love for the life she led was apparent in so much of what she did. She played both serious and comedy roles throughout her life and was considered an amazing star. Pleshette, however, saw it differently. “I’m an actress, and that’s why I’m still here,” she said in an 1999 interview. “Anybody who has the illusion that you can have a career as long as I have and be a star is kidding themselves.”
