Madelyn Dunham, Grandmother

Madelyn Dunham / Obama Campaign PhotoBarack Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, the woman who raised him throughout his young adult life, passed away today in Hawaii.  She was 86 years old.

All American’s, no matter what party you are affiliated with, can understand the tragedy this loss is at such a time in Senator Obama’s life.  Just one day from the election, a cornerstone figure of his family passes on.  Barack Obama and his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng released a statement about their loss today.

“She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility, She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.”

Sen. John McCain and his wife Cindy also provided their condolences today:

“We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives.”

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the fight for a cure to cancer.

Our thoughts are with everyone whose life was touched by that of Madelyn Dunham
