Martha Kostrya, Beloved Mother of Martha Stewart, Passes Away


Many are mourning the loss of a beloved mother. Martha Stewart’s mother, Martha Kostyra, passed away on Friday at the age of 93. Martha Kostyra, who was known by many loyal Martha Stewart viewers and followers as ‘Big Martha’, passed away at

Norwalk Hospital near her home inWeston, Connecticut, after suffering a stroke earlier in the week. Many know that Martha Stewart credited her mother with teaching her everything she knew about household tips and tricks. Martha frequently made appearances on Martha Stewart’s television programs and in her magazine providing her motherly care and guidance and a few little-known stories about her famous daughter.

Big Martha was a retired teacher and mother of six children. Martha Stewart notified her viewers on her online blog that her mother passed away and posted a memorial tribute to her mother there as well. You can view this at http://blogs1.marthastewart.com/martha/

Losing a mother is one of the hardest things a child must endure. We can all appreciate the sadness and grief that her children must be feeling during this time. We all wish them peace and solace as they mourn and celebrate their loving mother.

    Dear Martha,

    I can’t believe that I did not know that your mother passed away until yesterday. I learned so much from both of you over the years and am so thrilled that I still have your lst cookbook in my collection of over 300 cookbooks. In her honor, I plan to make her strudel for my mother real soon. As sosmeone who is blessed to still have my mother (92 yrs) I know how you felt about your mother who taught you everything you knew. God Bless her..you are both in my prayers.
