Minnesota Residents Grieve Over Bridge Tragedy
Minnesota residents observed a moment of silence on Tuesday in memory of those lost and hurt during the collapse of the Interstate 35W Bridge. Residents of the Twin Cities – St. Paul and Minneapolis – threw flowers into the river and poured vials of water into the river after blessing it as church bells tolled in the city. The observances were held to assist the city with its grief over the losses of lives and the trauma of the unexpected disaster.
Grief is a natural response to the loss of something cherished such as a person or possession. When we suffer loss, we often become socially withdrawn or lose interest in the activities of life. Many people also experience physical changes - headaches, stomach problems, nervous anxiety - when experiencing grief. These are signs that your body is trying to cope with the loss. All of these types of reactions are natural signs of grief and for many are necessary steps toward recovering from a loss.
Those most affected by the tragedy in Minnesota took the first step toward healing this week, by taking a moment to remember those they lost. Accepting that things have changed and honoring those who we have lost are great ways to begin to heal from the hurt felt from loss.
