Mississippi Democrat, Evelyn Gandy, Passes Away

Former Mississippi Lt. Gov. Evelyn Gandy has died at the age of 87 after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Gandy, who died on December 23 at her home near Hattiesburg, served in politics for 40 years. She will be remembered as the first woman in Mississippi to be elected as a state representative, state treasurer, insurance commissioner and lieutenant governor.

Gandy always kept a positive, equal position when it came to women in politics. In 2002 she was quoted as saying, “I can share in their [women politicians] victory and their defeat. I have felt both. We’re not trying to be better than men; we’re just trying to join them.”

Gandy will be honored in a state memorial service and will lie in state at the Capitol. For more on Evelyn Gandy’s life, read her online obituary on CNN.
