Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead in his hotel room early today, Wednesday, October 12, 2008. Mitchell was just 61 years old and the last surviving member of the legendary 1960s band.
Mitchell was found in his Benson Hotel room in Portland, OR after performing for the Experience Hendrix Tour on Friday in the Northwest city. He was spending the weekend in Portland and had plans to leave on Wednesday. An employee for the hotel found Mitchell this morning. It appears that he died of natural causes though an autopsy is planned.
In an AP interview, Janie Hendrix, chief executive of the Experience Hendrix Tour and Jimi Hendrix’ stepsister said, “”He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated.”
The world has lost an amazing drummer and a legendary musician for a generation-changing band. His loss will be felt throughout the music community.
