Mormon Leader Gordon B. Hinckley Dies At Age 97
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints notified the public that Mormon leader Gordon B. Hinckley died on Sunday, January 27 with his family around him. He was suffering from failing health and spokespeople stated that he died of natural causes due to age. Mr. Hinckley became the 15th president of the Salt Lake City-based church in 1995 and served until his death at the age of 97. The church boasts roughly 13 million followers.
“His life was a true testament of service, and he had an abiding love for others,” reflected U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, Utah Republican and fellow Mormon. “His wit, wisdom, and exemplary leadership will be missed by not only members of our faith, but by people of all faiths throughout the world.”
Hinckley worked in the church for 70 years, helping the churches public relations when controversies over polygamy and discrimination arose. He was married for over 65 years to Marjorie Pay and had 5 children, 25 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
Hinckley’s shoes will be difficult to fill. The church will look to find a successor after Gordon’s memorial service.
