NBA Coach Chuck Daly dies

DalyChuck Daly, hall of fame coach for the Detroit Pistons, died today at age 78. He died in Jupiter, Florida, and was able to spend his last moments with his family. Daly led the Pistons to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. The Pistons eventually retired the number 2 jersey in honor of the titles and Daly’s acheivements.

Daly, born and raised in Pennsylvania, attended Bloomsburg State. After coaching in various high schools and colleges, his first NBA gig came with the Philadelphia 76ers. Finally, in 1983, the Pistons hired Daly. The legendary coach still holds the record for most wins in Pistons history.

Many will remember Daly for his unmistakeable style. Dubbed “Daddy Rich,” Daly always looked his best while coaching in his typical pin-striped, 3-piece silk suit. Daly will also be remembered for his leadership of the “Bad Boys,” his aggressive, rough-and-tumble Pistons team. Defense was Daly’s message, and his team delivered.

Daly also coached the 1992 Olympic Gold Medal “Dream Team.”
