Playwright Robert Anderson Passes Away
The author of the Broadway hit “Tea and Sympathy” Mr. Robert Anderson has passed away. The 91 year old writer died on Monday, February 9, 2009 of pneumonia at his home in Manhattan. Anderson had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Anderson stirred people’s emotions and made them think with his critically acclaimed “Tea and Sympathy” about a prep school boy and his headmaster’s wife. The play touched on topics of homosexuality, propriety and infidelity. Anderson later created a screenplay of the story that became a movie starring Deborah Kerr and directed by Vincent Minnelli. He also wrote several other plays including “You know I can’t hear you when the water’s running” and “I never sang for my father.”
Anderson took his talents to the television, film and finally to print, writing several novels later in his life. The New York born writer was an extreme talent that will be greatly missed.
A memorial service for Robert Anderson is being planned for Friday, February 13, 2009.
