Teen Writes Book to Help Young Grievers

At the age of ten Jerome Biroo lost his mother to cancer. Six years later, the teen has let his guard down as he recounts his experiences about dealing with death at a young age as he offers young people advice about this process in a book titled Chances: A Teen Reshapes His Life After the Death of a Parent.

Biroo’s website states:

“Since (his mother’s) passing, Jerome has dedicated himself to sharing his story with youth just like him who have experienced a loss of someone they love. Despite this negative moment in his childhood, he hopes to spread a message of positivity and guidance to his readers.”

Children and Grief

Up to one in five individuals lose a person close to them before the age of 18. It can be hard to know how to support a young person who is experiencing grief because children of different ages do not grieve in the same manner and have different understandings about death. Available recourses, however, can enlighten adults who know a child facing this particular difficulty by providing insight into a child’s grieving process, tips about the right things to say to a young person in this situation and additional resources to help children and their families.
