Thousands in U.S. Mourn for Polish First Couple

Lech and Maria Kaczynski, the president of Poland and his wife, were buried April 18, 2010 in a massive state funeral in Krakow. The couple died in an airplane crash last week that also killed 94 Polish dignitaries who were flying to Russia to attend a memorial service for Polish prisoners of war killed in Russia during World War II.

Mourners have gathered not only in the capital city of Poland, but in the United States as well. WVIB.com reports thousands of mourners paid their respects to the late president and his wife, remembering him as a leader who “preserved freedom and democracy for his people.” Some are calling this tragedy “Poland’s 9/11.”

Many hope this event will improve the relationship between Poland and Russia, and some mourners are signing their name in a book of condolence. Residents of Western New York will have the opportunity to sign this book throughout the week at Buffalo’s City Hall before it is sent to sister city Rzeszow, Poland. WVIB.com’s report concludes, “As mourners continue to grieve, they look for divine intervention to help them heal and grow.”
