Toddler’s Legacy Continues More than a Decade Later

Twelve-years-ago, Danny Keysar ate lunch, laid down for a nap and proceeded to do what many toddlers his age do. The 16-month-old woke from his nap early and got to his feet. However, according to Philly.com, Danny’s neck got caught in the collapsible side-rail of the portable crib and choked to death. Although the v-shaped rail did have a lock mechanism, it did not prevent the rail from tightening around the small boy’s neck.

Danny was Not the Only Victim

Danny’s parents, Linda Ginzel and Boaz Keysar, still grieve for their little boy, who would be in middle school today. Upon investigation, the parents found that out the dangerous crib was recalled a several years earlier before Danny’s death and contributed to the deaths of at least three other toddlers. The Philly.com report states that dozens of children have died in similar incidents.

Proactive Grief in Memory of a Son

Ginzel and Keysar formed Kids in Danger (KID), a non-profit that advocates for the safety of children’s products. Through the non-profit, the couple and others lobby for rules and laws to require safety testing before a product is placed on a store shelf. In addition, the group has asked manufacturers to include a contact card that parents could fill out and send to back after purchasing a product in the event of a recall or a found danger. KID has a website that posts warnings, recalls, advocacy information and a section that shares how children and babies died because of unsafe products.

Congress, more than 10 years after Danny’s death and the death of other babies and toddlers, passed the Danny Keysar Child Safety Notification Act, which was included in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

Danny Keysar’s story is a good example of how parents turned the tragedy of losing a child into an opportunity to save others.
