I have heard this as a chant, as a hymn and recited as a poem. However it has been used in some form at every single funeral I have ever attended and always brings back memories of lost loved ones.
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want.
he makes me down to lie
in pastures green; he leadeth me
the quiet waters by.
My soul he doth restore again;
and me to walk doth make
within the paths of righteousness,
even for his own Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale,
yet will I fear no ill;
for thou art with me; and thy rod
and staff my comfort still.
My table thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes;
my head thou dost with oil anoint,
and my cup overflows.
Goodness and mercy all my life
shall surely follow me;
and in God's house forevermore
my dwelling place shall be.
Words: Francis Rowe, 1650

we sing this too at our local church. This song brings back memories for me too about my family and all my friends who passed on. This is a well written poem.

It is actually based on Psalm 23, written by King David. Here it is in the King James Version of the Old Testament:
Psalm 23
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

This is a very well known piece of literature. I've seen this used at many funerals that i've been to. Thats cool to know that this actually came from the bible.

Your welcome. I like to think. I am on the right path. Although our paths are crooked. We never know when the path may go off track. I try to read the bible each day. Thank you all for sharing.
